Introduction

Momentum undertook the Legion modelling of West Ham Station to support the operational planning exercise necessary to provide a route between the Olympic Stadium and West Ham Station during the post event period of the London 2012 Summer Olympics.

The project involved assessing the implications of interchange movements anticipated from origin/destination data at the station. The interchange between the Network Rail and London Underground platforms involved narrow staircases, an overbridge, and a constrained concourse. Further modelling was undertaken in the forecourt of the station to assess pedestrian and vehicle impacts of the crossing of Stratford High Street. The work ultimately resulted in an agreement between relevant stakeholders regarding the ability to facilitate event day demand.

Following the assessment for the London 2012 Olympics, further modelling was undertaken in 2016 to assess the implications of West Ham Football Club moving from Upton Park to the Olympic Stadium. This assessment involved modelling pre and post event demand for weekday and weekend matches and future demand scenarios accounting for demand from the Barking Riverside Extension, passenger data and station surveys.
